When are habitat patches really islands?

چکیده
Here we present a method for determining whether habitat patches are truly functioning as habitat islands. We do so by assessing if the species distribution pattern across the islands, when compared to a mainland pattern, conforms to the predictions of the theory of island biogeography. The putative islands in our study are a series of hummocks in a swamp in the ES George Reserve, Pinckney, MI. We assess the tree flora on each hummock and find that hummocks that are at a distance from themainland forest have fewer tree species than subsets of the mainland having the same area as the island. The four hummocks greater than 350 m from the mainland had significantly fewer species than mainland samples of the same size, while those less than 200 m awaywere not statistically different. These results suggest that at least some of the hummocks function as biological islands for trees. 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Flying between Sky Islands: The Effect of Naturally Fragmented Habitat on Butterfly Population Structure
High elevation montane areas are called "sky islands" when they occur as a series of high mountains separated by lowland valleys. Different climatic conditions at high elevations makes sky islands a specialized type of habitat, rendering them naturally fragmented compared to more continuous habitat at lower elevations. Species in sky islands face unsuitable climate in the intervening valleys wh...

Stochastic patch occupancy models (SPOMs) are a class of discrete time Markov chains used to model the presence/absence of a population in a collection of habitat patches. This class of model is popular with ecologists due to its ability to incorporate important factors of the habitat patch network such as connectivity and distance between patches as well as heterogeneity in patch characteristi...
متن کاملSelection of nesting habitat of hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) in two coral islands of Qeshm and Hengam in the Persian Gulf, Iran
The Persian Gulf islands are the nesting regions for the severely endangered hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) species. Therefore, the selection of the nesting habitat of this species in the two islands of Qeshm and Hengam was studied by a five-member working group in the spring of 2013 - 2015. Ultimately, 23 and 17 nests were identified in the south of Qeshm Island and in the south and...
متن کاملThe matrix matters: Effective isolation in fragmented landscapes
As the human population expands, landscapes worldwide are becoming fragmented into remnant patches of original habitat, surrounded by agriculture and other human land uses. With diminishing opportunities to preserve large tracts of pristine habitat, the future of biodiversity conservation lies increasingly in these fragmented areas. Therefore, understanding the processes at work in fragmented l...
متن کاملInvestigating the Habitat Patches of the Baluchistan Black Bear (Ursus thibetanus gedrosianus), Using Landscape Metrics (Case Study: Bahr Asman and Zaryab Areas, Kerman Province)
Habitat analysis using landscape metrics can be efficient in better management of habitat. As a critically endangered subspecies, the Baluchistan black bear is scattered in the Bahr Asman and Zaryab areas in Kerman province. The purpose of this study was to model the distribution of the sub-species and evaluate the quality of its habitat patches, using landscape metrics. Distribution modeling w...
